​Class Levels

The class levels are listed as follows:

• FOUNDATION (Primary): A student who is just starting to learn Bharatanāṭyam and has no prior experience with the art form.
• DEVELOPING (Grade 1 and 2): A student who has learned a few basic Aḍavus (foundational steps) and is building familiarity with Bharatanāṭyam movements.
• SKILLED (Grade 3 and 4): A student who has mastered most or all Aḍavus and is beginning to explore their first Mārgam (Bharatanāṭyam performance sequence)
• CONFIDENT (Grade 5 and 6): A student who has learned most or all parts of their first Mārgam and is refining their execution of the performance.
• PROFICIENT (Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate): A student who has progressed to learning their second Mārgam, demonstrating more advanced technique and understanding of Bharatanāṭyam.
• ADVANCED (Advanced 1 and Advanced 2): A student who has learned most or all pieces of their second Mārgam, showing mastery of complex Bharatanāṭyam repertoire and performance skill

Please not that students who are aged 8 and above are put straight into Developing even if they are just starting to learn Bharatanāṭyam.

The class levels below are for adults:

Uniform

Foundation Lessons

• Females should wear a suitably tailored Salwār or Curidār Kamīz (which must match the colours of our school uniform).
• Males should wear a suitably tailored Kurtā Pyjāma (which must match the colours of our school uniform).
• All students should have their waist firmly bound.
• Hair should be pinned away from the face and, if necessary, drawn back in a single plait or bun. A long plait should be secured at the back to prevent its movement distracting from the dance.
• No ankle bells should be worn.

Developing, Skilled and Confident Lessons

• Females should wear a dance practice Sāri.
• Males should wear a Dhoti or a suitably tailored Kurtā ​Pyjama (which must match the colours of our school uniform).
• All students should have their waist firmly bound.
• Hair should be pinned away from the face and, if necessary, drawn back in a single plait or bun. A long plait should be secured at the back to prevent its movement distracting from the dance.

Proficient and Advanced Lessons
