CLASSES

​Class Levels

The class levels are listed as follows:
  • FOUNDATION (Beginner): A student who is just starting to learn Bharatanatyam and has no prior experience with the art form.
  • DEVELOPING (Grade 1 and 2): A student who has learned a few basic adavus (foundational steps) and is building familiarity with Bharatanatyam movements.
  • SKILLED (Grade 3 and 4): A student who has mastered most or all adavus and is beginning to explore their first Markam (Bharatanatyam performance sequence)
  • CONFIDENT (Grade 5 and 6): A student who has learned most or all parts of their first Markam and is refining their execution of the performance.
  • PROFICIENT (Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate): A student who has progressed to learning their second Markam, demonstrating more advanced technique and understanding of Bharatanatyam.
  • ADVANCED (Advanced 1 and Advanced 2): A student who has learned most or all pieces of their second Markam, showing mastery of complex Bharatanatyam repertoire and performance skill

The class levels below are for adults:
  • DEVELOPING ADULT (Grade 1, 2 and 3): A student who is an adult, is new to dance and is building familiarity with the basics of Bharatanatyam.
  • CONFIDENT ADULT (Grade 4, 5 and 6): A student who is an adult and is learning their first Markam and cleaning technique of their peformance.

Uniform

Primary (Beginner) Lessons

Picture
  • Females should wear a suitably tailored Salwar or Churidar Kamiz (which must match the colours of our school uniform).
  • Males should wear a suitably tailored Kurta Pyjama (which must match the colours of our school uniform).
  • All students should have their waist firmly bound.
  • Hair should be pinned away from the face and, if necessary, drawn back in a single plait or bun. A long plait should be secured at the back to prevent its movement distracting from the dance.
  • No ankle bells or Salangai should be worn.

Adult Beginner Lessons and Grade 1 - 6 Lessons

  • Females should wear a dance practice Sari (which will be given to you by the teacher). The blouse and pyjama must be bought yourselves.
  • Males should wear a Dhoti or a suitably tailored Kurta Pyjama (which must match the colours of our school uniform).
  • All students should have their waist firmly bound.
  • Hair should be pinned away from the face and, if necessary, drawn back in a single plait or bun. A long plait should be secured at the back to prevent its movement distracting from the dance.

Vocational Grade Lessons
